West Bengal Braces for Early Monsoon with Heavy Rain Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon is set to arrive in West Bengal earlier than anticipated, bringing significant rainfall to several districts. According to a recent update, the southwest monsoon, which typically enters Kerala around June 1, is expected to reach West Bengal within the next few days, potentially by June 1-2, 2025. This early onset is attributed to a meteorological trough extending from northwest Uttar Pradesh to East Bangladesh via Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal, fostering conditions for thunderstorms and gusty winds across the state.

South Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms until at least May 24, 2025. Districts such as Purulia, Bankura, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia are under a rain alert, with wind speeds expected to reach 40-50 kmph in some areas. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for these regions, warning of potential waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruptions due to strong winds. Kolkata, which recently saw light showers offering relief from heatwave conditions with temperatures around 35.9°C, is expected to witness continued thundershowers, keeping maximum temperatures in check.

In North Bengal, the monsoon’s early arrival is likely to bring heavier rainfall, particularly in districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. The IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas, raising concerns about potential landslides and flooding. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to high wind speeds of 90-100 kmph over the north Bay of Bengal.

This early monsoon is a mixed blessing for West Bengal. While it offers respite from the sweltering summer heat, the heavy rainfall could lead to challenges like waterlogging and traffic disruptions, as seen recently in Bengaluru under similar conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated with IMD alerts and take precautions during heavy rain spells.
