Dollar Tree’s Bold Reset: Selling Family Dollar and Closing Stores
In a bold move to refocus its business, Dollar Tree has announced the sale of its Family Dollar chain to private equity firms Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management for approximately $1 billion, with the deal expected to close by June 2025. This follows a challenging decade since Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar for $9 billion in 2015, a period marked by inflation, increased shoplifting, and competition from giants like Walmart and Amazon. The sale aims to streamline operations and strengthen Dollar Tree’s core brand.

As part of its restructuring, Dollar Tree plans to close 370 Family Dollar stores and 30 Dollar Tree locations over the next few years as leases expire. This follows the closure of 600 Family Dollar stores in 2024, reflecting a strategic pivot to optimize its portfolio. CEO Michael Creedon emphasized returning to Dollar Tree’s roots, with plans to open 300 new stores in 2025 and upgrade existing ones to offer items up to $7, targeting higher-income shoppers. The company reported a 2% increase in same-store sales for the quarter ending February 1, 2025, with net sales of $5 billion, excluding Family Dollar.

The closures, impacting around 7,500 jobs nationwide, may strain communities reliant on Family Dollar for affordable essentials, particularly in rural areas. However, Dollar Tree’s acquisition of 170 leases from the bankrupt 99 Cents Only chain signals growth ambitions. Despite a $1.71 billion net loss in Q4 2023, largely due to impairment charges, Dollar Tree anticipates 2025 net sales of $18.5-$19.1 billion. This transformation, while painful, positions Dollar Tree to navigate a tough retail landscape and capitalize on its standalone brand.
